I have just joined BookCrossing.com last week. The idea is simple: You make an entry about a book you own (“register”), the system will generate an identification number for it (called BCID), you mark the BCID on the book, and then either pass the book to a friend or leave the book anywhere. Anyone who picks up the book and use the BCID to leave a message on the website.
It is all about sharing, not just sharing of tangible assets (books in this case), but also one’s viewpoints and feelings. In fact, this type of activities is quite common in foreign countries. Some people are doing the same with disposable cameras.
There are about 157 members in Hong Kong, although many of them seem to be inactive. I have registered a few books and may release them shortly.
By the way, if you ever register as a member with BookCrossing, I will appreciate that you name me as the referring member (my screen name is alanine).
